Aviation creates value
Airports are engines of economic growth. They provide enormous value to the global trade and economy by facilitating passenger and cargo aircraft movements while also creating employment across the value chain. On a global scale, aviation supports nearly 66 Million jobs and creates an economic impact of over USD 2.7 Trillion, which is equivalent of 3.6% of the GDP.
Advancement of Indian aviation
India is the epicentre of aviation growth and one of the fastest growing domestic markets in the world. Over the last two decades, passenger traffic has seen an exponential rise. We witnessed a passenger traffic surge of +11% in the last few years and at this pace, India is poised to emerge as the third largest global aviation market, only next to US and China. Despite a temporary slump in the Indian economy, influenced by global events such as Covid-19, the story of aviation in India continues to beat all odds.
The passenger growth over the last few years has been primarily driven by traffic emerging from tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Some airports in these cities were clocking over 25% growth in passenger traffic. Such growth in smaller cities will continue once we tide over the current disruption caused by the pandemic though it may take some time to.
During FY 2024-25, airports in India handled over 340.77 Million passengers and this is estimated to cross 1 Billion over the next decade. Airline carriers in India operate over 750 aircraft and have over 1200 new aircraft on orders to be delivered over the next decade. There is a huge untapped potential for aviation in India. Despite featuring as an emerging
aviation market, the penetration of seats per capita remains meagre 0.10 as compared to 2.5 in USA. This demonstrates the huge potential latent in the market.
The Government has ambitious plans to support the increasing demand for air-travel, one of the objectives to have 200 operational airports across the country by 2040, from the current number of over 120 airports.
Future landscape
The sector is expected to witness INR 36,000 crore (US$ 5 Billion) investment in the next five years, driven by increasing interest from the private sector as well to create Greenfield International Airport assets. The Government is also planning to invest US$ 1.85 billion for development of new airport infrastructure including developing helipads, state of the art aviation navigation services by 2026.
While the focus remains to create world-class aviation eco-system, this will entail developing building airport infrastructure, creating new facilities for passengers, new runways and upgradation of technology. The need of hour is not only value creation in aviation but also requirement of experienced and competent professionals to provide solutions that fulfils ambitions of Indian aviation story.
